Introduction

Process instrumentation for safe hydrogen storage

Hydrogen storage is pivotal for advancing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies across stationary power, portable power and transportation applications. Despite its high energy content per mass, hydrogen’s low ambient temperature density necessitates innovative, energy-intensive storage methods such as high-pressure tanks, cryogenic liquid storage and adsorption or absorption within solids. Process instrumentation plays a crucial role in hydrogen storage systems, enabling real-time monitoring, control and safety.

Parameters

Focus on key process parameters

Accurate level measurement of liquid hydrogen

Liquid hydrogen continuously evaporates, producing boil-off gas within the storage tank. Also, density variations caused by temperature and pressure changes pose significant challenges for the level measurement device used and potentially cause inaccurate readings or even damage.

Ensure hydrogen quality reliably

Hydrogen quality significantly impacts safe hydrogen storage as contaminants lead to reduction of the energy content while trace moisture can cause damage or corrosion, especially in cryogenic environments.

Level measurement

High accuracy in liquid hydrogen bulk storage level measurement with Endress+Hauser tank gauges

Cryogenic environments, boil-off gas and vapor pressure make accurate level measurement a challenging task. To ensure safe operation of the hydrogen tank as well as precise inventory, reliable level gauges and independent alarm gauges for overfill are vital. Our Proservo NMS81 offers:

  • Maximum reliability through accuracy up to ±0.4mm (± 0.02").
  • Superior corrosion resistance and high accuracy without influence of dc value or boil-off gas.
  • Hardware and software developed according to IEC 61508 up to SIL3 for high level of safety.
Optical Analysis

Rely on TDLAS gas analyzers to determine trace moisture accurately

Hydrogen can become saturated with moisture during underground storage. To ensure safe storage and further use, measuring its contamination with trace moisture is vital. Our J22 TDLAS gas analyzer reliably detects trace moisture in the ppm range and provides:

  • High accuracy and integrated diagnostic and verification with Heartbeat Technology.
  • Very fast response times for identifying process impurities.
  • Robust design for easy installation, commissioning and repair.
